How to test

Test the milk, not the drink. Always use expressed breast milk.

  1. Open

Tear open the foil pouch and take out the strip by the thumb tab. Don't use it if the reaction pad is already blue.

  2. Apply milk

Dip the reaction pad into a small amount of breast milk in a clean, dry container for 3 seconds, then remove it. Or express several drops directly onto the pad.

  3. Tap off

Gently tap off excess milk from the reaction pad.

  4. Wait

Wait 2 minutes for the result to appear. Don't read the result after 3 minutes.

  5. Compare

Compare the color of the reaction pad to the color chart.

Reading your result

No alcoholAlcohol present
NegativeNo color change on the reaction pad. No alcohol detected in the breast milk.
PositiveAny color change from light blue to dark blue, uniform or speckled, means alcohol is present. Re-test hourly until no alcohol is present.
Only the edges changedIf only the pad's outer edges show slight color and the center stays colorless, repeat the test with a new strip so the pad is fully saturated.

This test gives a yes/no indication of alcohol and is a preliminary screen only. It does not measure blood alcohol level or intoxication, and is not for diagnosing, preventing or treating any health condition in mothers or infants. Talk to your healthcare provider with any questions about alcohol and breastfeeding.

Test your milk, not your drink

The strips are made for breast milk only. Dipping a strip into wine, beer or spirits damages the enzyme on the pad, so the strip stops working and the result means nothing.

Do: dip the strip into expressed breast milk in a clean container. Don't: dip it into wine, beer or spirits.

Good to know

  • Alcohol vapors can cause a false positive. Disinfectants, deodorizers, perfumes and glass cleaners give off alcohol vapors. If you suspect vapors, test in a vapor-free area.
  • Some medicines contain alcohol. Certain liquid medications contain up to 25% alcohol (50 proof), and over-the-counter products that contain alcohol can also give a positive result.
  • Refrigerated milk or strips? Let both reach room temperature before testing.
  • One strip, one test. Don't reuse a strip, and don't open the foil pouch until just before use.
  • Check the pouch. Don't use a strip if the pouch is ripped or punctured, the strip is damaged, or it's past the expiration date on the pouch.
  • Keep strips out of reach of children.
